Interested in presenting? Apply Here!
Are you a Bama Biologist who would like to connect with local Alabama classrooms and inspire elementary students? You have come to the right place! Check out the information below.
Who can participate?
Anyone who is a student (undergraduate/graduate), postdoc, instructor, or professor in the department is welcome to apply to present.
Can Freshman and Sophomore undergraduates participate?
YES! Freshman and Sophomore students are welcome to participate. Most presenters are encouraged to talk about their research/field/lab experiences, but if you have not been able to participate in one of those yet, you can present on what it is like to be a Biology student and a topic within the field that really interests you. Please note that this topic must be considered appropriate for a school setting.
What do I need in order to participate?
You must have audio and visual capabilities including a webcam so that you can host a Zoom or Google Meet call. You must also have access to internet.
How much of a time commitment am I making?
You will need to complete the training module (roughly an hour and a half to complete) and one presentation should be about an hour. You can sign up to present for as many sessions as you want, whether you do only one or five (depending upon availability).
What happens after I sign up?
After you fill out the interest form, you will be emailed a link to the training module. You must complete the training module by the date specified in the email in order to be considered for matching with local classrooms. The training modules will further explain the program, prepare you for your presentation, and will educate you about general science outreach practices. Once complete, depending on availability you will be matched with a local classroom and will be expected to send them a Zoom link if the presentation is live or a pre-recorded video upon the teacher's request (more details in the training). You will create the Zoom meeting and will host it. The presentation will last 40-45 minutes, after which you will answer questions that the students may have.
What if I have technical difficulties the day of my presentation?
It happens! We can work with you and the teacher to reschedule if technical difficulties get in the way. If your schedule does not allow for you to present during the teacher's proposed dates, we can pair them with another teacher and attempt to pair you with a new classroom should you be available.
