Are you a Teacher who would like to request a Bama Biologist to virtually visit their classroom?
Welcome, teachers! We're excited that you're here. Meet A Bama Biologist is eager to connect your classroom with a stellar presenter.
Who is eligible?
Currently, Alabama classrooms with students from grades 2-5 are eligible for the program (although we plan to expand our eligibility in the future!).
My classroom is Pre-K through 1st grade and we really want to participate! Can we sign up?
Pre-K through 1st grade classrooms can participate in the program by request. Meet A Bama Biologist "Little Discoveries" is the program geared towards a younger audience. The program runs for 40 minutes instead of the regular one hour program to better engage the younger minds. This program is subject to availability of presenters for this specific program, which is why this is a special request. We still encourage you to
register your classroom!
Is the program virtual or in-person?
Due to UA regulations and the current pandemic, this program is only offered virtually.
What do I need in order for my classroom to participate?
You and your classroom must have access to audio and video capabilities. If your classroom is based in Zoom, yourself and your students can join the Zoom call initiated by the Bama Biologist OR they can join yours. If your classroom uses Google Meet, you can send your classroom's link to the presenter directly once you are matched. If your classroom is in person, you can project the Bama Biologist for your classroom to see. You can ask the presenter questions either via the microphone if you have one or via the chat function.
How The Program Works
Depending on your situation, we can either connect your with a Bama Biologist who will present to your classroom live via Zoom or they can send you a pre-recorded presentation tailor-made for your classroom and your students' questions. We recommend the live Zoom session; however, if your classes rotate or you teach the same class multiple times during the day, the pre-recorded session is a great option.
If you would like for your classroom to meet one of our Bama Biologists, you must fill out the registration form which will help us connect you with the most suitable Bama Biologist based on the dates and times you indicated and the topics you request. Please note that all requests must be made at least three weeks in advance of the first desired date to allow the presenter time to prepare. A teacher may also only request a Bama Biologist once per semester to allow other local classrooms the opportunity to connect with one of our Bama Biologists.
Once you have been connected with a Bama Biologist and confirm the presentation, the Bama Biologist will reach out to you to either send you a link to the Zoom or to send you the pre-recorded session. Should you decide to go the pre-recorded route, you can have your students send in questions to the Bama Biologist in advance so that they can answer those questions during their recording.
On the day of your live Zoom or Google Meet session, the Bama Biologist will present for 40-45 minutes and will then have time set aside for students to ask questions.
What if we have technical difficulties?
It happens! If you experience technical difficulties that prevent a Bama Biologist from presenting, we can work with you to reschedule to a new date. We will try our best to have the same Bama Biologist present to your classroom.
Can I have a Bama Biologist present on a topic related to a subject we are currently learning?
YES! In the registration form, you can check off the topics that you would like for the presenter to cover. We will do our best to match you with a Bama Biologist that is closely aligned with your requests - however, this is based upon our availability and therefore we cannot guarantee that you will be paired with a Bama Biologist that aligns with your requests. In this case, you will be informed in advance which Bama Biologist we were able to pair you with based on your requested dates, and you are welcome to either request another pairing or be added to the waitlist if all availability is full. You will be able to communicate with the Bama Biologist before the presentation, so if you have specific requests for topics that they can cover, you can work with them beforehand.
